Newsletter www.mostlypink.net October 2007.
Hello dear friends,
Local Library.
My local library has a hugh collection of cd's in the house, for € 1,50 you can borrow and listen them.
In 2004 they had 17.000 cd's that went to the peoples home, this year only 3.000 ...
They think the cause is the downloading and the (illegal) accessibily of the new albums on the www.
Okay you can have your thoughts about lending out cd's, but nevertheless from 17.000 dropping to
3.000 items...
And the local cd-store closed his door this mounth.
Radiohead. "In Rainbows", the seventh studio album by alternative rock group Radiohead, has become available for download from their official website. The band have let fans decide what to pay for the 10 MP3 files - from nothing to £100.
A retail version is expected next year, while fans can also pre-order a £40 "discbox" from the band's website, which has extra tracks, a vinyl version of the album, and a lyric booklet as well as the download.
John Wesley,
free Downloads..
The very symphatic guitaris from Florida and know from his session work with uncle Fish and
Porcupine Tree
has made some albums downloadeable; for free!
More (illegal) downloading.
Nick Barrett of Pendragon has started a cruisade against illegal downloading. please take a look at his forum and read how many English pounds he probably lost. And more personal remaks abut pre-paying an album and nice personal pictures.

In the meantime a court in the US convicted a woman to pay $222,000 for the dozens of songs she pulled from the Internet.

Nick Barrett is one of the guest of Neo:
Neo. "Broadcast" concert filmed at the beautiful Wyspianski Theatre in Katowice showcases some of the greatest tracks from IQ, Pendragon, Pallas, Arena, Nolan/Wakeman and more, played and performed as you have never seen them before. This DVD is a must have for fans of these great bands, or as an introduction to them all. Superb musicianship and an awful lot of fun! As Clive Nolan comments, NEO's main aim was to "try and brake some new frontiers (…) and to represent these bands and so to get the people who haven't seen them to get an idea what they're about." The gig featured a guest appearance of two other eminent prog-rock figures: Pendragon's vocalist/guitarist Nick Barrett and Pallas' vocalist Alan Reed.
The DVD includes an interview with John Jowitt (IQ, Frost etc etc.) and Clive Nolan (Arena, Adam Wakeman etc etc.), as also bonus video footage from the band's soundcheck at ROSfest. Also available in a limited swing case edition, with a bonus CD with songs recorded at the concert!

Martin Orford. About Radiohead, MySpace and downloading.
"Hi Nick,
I've only recently started work again on the new album as I'm still tying up the
loose ends from leaving IQ. I'm not going to rush it, so I don't have a definite release date, but it
should be out some time in the first half of 2008 if I can raise the money to finish it. The album is
substantially complete in terms of writing though I need to finish the lyrics on 3 or 4 songs. The guests
on it so far include Nick d'Virgilio, John Wetton, Dave Meros and Steve Thorne
though there may well be others.
Regarding Myspace, I really don't like it so I definitely won't be having a Myspace page. And I won't be
issuing any sound samples or promos ahead of the release either; I think it would be nice to do it the
old way where no-one gets to hear the album until the day it comes out. You can call me old-fashioned
because I am!
I think like most new marketing ideas Myspace worked well the first time it was used (notably in promoting Lily Allen) but its usefulness is bound to be forever diminishing after that. I haven't had a single mail order sale from someone that said they discovered the music via Myspace, though I've had lots of requests for free CDs from websites/radio stations that are generally never heard of again! So in my opinion its importance as a marketing tool is enormously over-rated. It just doesn't generate sales, and if anything it probably stimulates the illegal download scene.
There are lots of these one-off marketing things around at the moment and the Radiohead "pay what you like" stunt is another example; sure it'll work the first time because it attracts publicity, but anyone else that's daft enough to attempt it after that is likely to go out of business very quickly.
All the best,
Martin Orford."
About downloading:
"With regard to the downloading thing, personally I'm not impressed if we have 2 million fans that
download for free - they're no use to us whatsoever and I'd rather have just one that actually buys the
CDs. Because if everyone expects to get music for free, all the middle ground of the music business
(and that includes IQ) will disappear. And all that will be left are the amateur no-hopers and the
superstars. The rest of us will all have given up due to lack of funding. This is not something that
could happen, it's happening already, and based on current trends I give bands like IQ and record
companies like GEP a life-expectancy of 5 years at best.
IQ.
Mark Westworth is the new keyboard wizard. Mark played in Darwin's Radio.
The much discussed vinyl pressing of IQ's 2004 album Dark Matter will finally be released on the Primal Vinyl label. The record will be pressed on 180g vinyl and presented in a de-luxe gatefold sleeve. Although not strictly a limited edition, the run will be for 1500 albums and at this stage it's not expected to be re-pressed beyond that quantity.
Panic Room.
After the split up of Karnataka, with the great vocalists Rachel Jones (now in the Reasoning) and
Ann-Marie Helder, Ian Jones started up an new Karnataka and a project called Chasing the Moonson, the
other bandmembers started up this new promising band.
The debut Panic Room album to be released shortly (yes, annoyingly vague, aren't they!) will be entitled
"Visionary Position".
The band is:
Paul Davies: electric guitars,
Jonathan Edwards: keyboards,
Alun Vaughan: bass guitars,
Gavin John Griffiths: drums (Fish & Mostly Autumn live 2007),
Anne-Marie Helder: vocals & flute.

Galleon. The wait is over... the new, long awaited album from the Swedish top-proggers Galleon is out next month. The album wich is entitled "Engines of creation" is released by Progressive Records on the 7th of November 2007.
Manning. "Songs From The Bilston House" It's out now!!
Breathing Space. The former keyboard player of Mostly Autumn, Iain Jennings, will release his second album with his band. I heard some songs and i can tell you the leading role is again for Olivia Sparnenn with some nice guitar work. The launch party of "Coming Up For Air" wil be at The Post Office Club, York, Friday 26th October.
Riverside. Their new album is called "Rapid Eye Movement". Riverside's music can best be described as a cross between atmospheric Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree, mixed up with modern metal elements. Their sound is fresh and authentic and they are without a doubt one of THE up and coming bands of the genre at the moment! The new album has some new ambient influences...
Glass Hammer. The brand new CD " Culture Of Ascent" by the mighty Glass Hammer is almost here, and features Jon Anderson (Yes) on guest vocals! This is going to be one of the best releases of the year!
Jon Anderson & Steve Howe. Both superstars are touring in the smaller club circuit! One of the places is the famous Spirit of 66 in Verviers. Check out for the dates and places the links below.
Saga. The new Saga album 10.000 days wil be released on the 22nd of October in Europe, on this spot you've the opportunity to check out a new song with vocalist Michael Sadler, who is leaving the band at the end of the year! 10.000 days is a worthy last album in our opinion.
Lasse Hoile. Made some great video-artwork for Porcupine Tree, Blackfield & more bands and docs. Please have a look at his creations.
