Newsletter mostlypink.net February 04 2007.
Hello dear friends,
EMI allowed me to hold a competition, you can win 4 cd singles or 4 finyl singles (yes the old singles, we used to play in our youth)
of "Arnold Layne" sung by David Bowie and by Richard Wright! Both versions are recorded live.
So please go to the competition page and fill in the answers. And by the way... I think I'm happy with every answer if it is a nice message ;-) We here in the lovely South of the Netherlands are friendly and helpful.
The official release date of the single in the Netherlands is 04th of February!
It would be cool if this original first hit single in the UK of the The Pink Floyd would end in the Top 10 again!
David Bowie Comments:
David Bowie described Barrett as a "major inspiration", saying: "I can't tell you how sad I feel.
"The few times I saw him perform in London at UFO and the Marquee clubs during the '60s will forever be etched in my mind.
"He was so charismatic and such a startlingly original songwriter. Also, along with Anthony Newley, he was the first guy I'd heard to sing pop or rock with a British accent.
"His impact on my thinking was enormous. A major regret is that I never got to know him. A diamond indeed."
David Bowie did cover "See Emily Play", another Syd Barrett composition, on the album "Pin Ups" (1973).
There was a competition: "who makes the best cover of Arnold Layne.
The results of the Arnold Layne Competition will be unveiled on Wednesday 7th February.
The prize is a day's recording in Abbey Road Studios, and famed Pink Floyd and ex-Hipgnosis designer Storm Thorgerson
has also agreed to design a new logo for the winning entrant.
There is another band that will try to get in the charts: Magenta
.
Magenta will celebrate their move to a new label Tigermoth records, with the release of a single “Speechless” as both a download and CD single on March19th.
The song is a slice of exuberant, infectious prog rock with a great hook and a strong contemporary feel.
Says Magenta keyboard player Rob Reed, who co-wrote the song with singer Christina Booth.
The band have shot a video to go with the single and a short clip is online at a special mini-site that the label
have set up for the single at www.magentasingle.com Both CD and download versions also include a superb new full-band
arrangement of Anger showcased at the bands live shows towards the end of last year. Additional information is
available at the band’s website www.magenta-web.com , and you can hear a clip at the band’s Myspace site at
www.myspace.com/magentauk.
The tracks for download will be:
Talking about charts a bit more. Swedish DJ Eric Prydz
,
known for his 2004 sensual music video, “Call On Me”, has
recently released a remix of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Part II” with a music video promoting
environmental activism.
I like the remix version of Eric Prydz vs Floyd - "Proper Education", because it was great song anyway, because of the goal behind it (stop the global warning, stop spilling energy) and because of the fast hip black and white clip.

Eric Prydz
brings me to another cover from one of my favourite bands "Comfortably Numb" by
Mostly Autumn
. It's an old clip, I'ven't seen them playing this song for the last few years. But I was really impressed when I saw this band doing this masterpiece for the first time in my life 7 years ago. Mostly Autumn will be doing a launch party at the Astoria / London the 10th of February. A long review of their new album, Heart Full of Sky, you can find here.
Speaking about launch parties: | |
Blind Ego had their launch party in the lovely South of the Germany. Blind Ego is a solo project of Kalle Wallner, the guitarist of RPWL. And they're my favourite German band. Kalle's album is an excelent mix of rock and prog and he has some great names on board, please check him out. My Belgium friends of Prog-Nose did a nice review, find it here. |
Other short news:
Brian Eno will work together with Coldplay on their new album.
Roger Waters.
Roger has started a new world tour. Read a review from Sidney at
Brain Damage.
He has also a new song called
Hello I love you.... mmm not his best work.
David Gilmour DVD.
The live DVD from David Gilmour's 2006 tour, shot over three nights at London's Royal Albert Hall, will be
released later this year.
The 2-disc set, apparently called "Remember That Night" (a lyric from the title track of David's On An Island album),
is said to include over 100 minutes of additional material on disc two, including a documentary.
Pink Floyd - Echoes (the book).
From gigs in tiny church halls in the mid-sixties to multi-million selling albums and spectacular stadium shows
all around the world, the Pink Floyd story is a rock legend. This remarkable book is a celebration of Pink Floyd’s
entire career (March 2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of their first recording, ‘Arnold Layne’) and it
contains a biographical account of the band’s collective and individual careers from their pre-Floyd origins in 1962
right through to the present day. Buy at:
